Researchers once thought a creature in Madagascar was a relative. Now, they believe it was just an animal that looked like an aardvark. The aardvark (Orycteropus afer) is a unique, nocturnal mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is a medium-sized animal known for its specialized burrowing habits and diet. The aardvark is highly significant because it is the only living member of the order Tubulidentata. This order is named for the animal's unusual, tube-like teeth. While it may resemble a pig or a South American anteater, it is not closely related to either. Instead, it belongs to a large group of mammals called Afrotheria. This group includes other famous animals like elephants, manatees, and hyraxes. 
To survive, the aardvark uses highly specialized physical tools to find and eat food. It is a myrmecophage, which means it eats primarily ants and termites. The process begins with its incredibly advanced sense of smell. The aardvark has nine olfactory bulbs, which is more than any other placental mammal. It also has ten nasal conchae, which provide more space for the moist tissue used in smelling. Once it detects a nest, the aardvark uses its powerful legs and sharp, shovel-like claws to dig. Its forearm bones, the radius and ulna, are unusually stout to support this heavy digging. After breaking into a nest, the aardvark uses a long, thin, snake-like tongue to collect insects. This tongue is kept sticky by highly developed salivary glands that ring its neck. An aardvark can consume as many as 50,000 insects in a single night.
The aardvark's body is built specifically for a life of digging. It has a stout body with a prominently arched back and tough skin for protection. Its limbs are moderate in length, but the rear legs are longer than the forelegs. The front feet have only four toes because they have lost the thumb, or pollex. Each toe has a large, robust nail that looks like a mix between a claw and a hoof. To withstand the stress of digging, the aardvark has a special type of bone tissue called compacted coarse cancellous bone (CCCB). This tissue provides high resistance to the strain of moving earth. 
One of the most remarkable features of the aardvark is its dental structure. Unlike most mammals, aardvark teeth lack a pulp cavity and an enamel coating. Instead, each tooth contains clusters of thin, hexagonal, parallel tubes of vasodentin. These tubes are held together by a substance called cementum. The number of these tiny tubes depends on the size of the tooth, with the largest teeth having about 1,500. Because they have no enamel, the teeth wear away and regrow continuously throughout the animal's life. Adult aardvarks possess 14 upper and 12 lower cheek teeth, which are peg-like and rootless.
Scientists have used fossils to trace the long history of the aardvark. Early relatives of the species appeared in Africa near the end of the Paleocene epoch. The first clear member of the Tubulidentata order was likely Myorycteropus africanus, found in Kenyan Miocene deposits. The earliest members of the genus Orycteropus, such as Orycteropus mauritanicus, were found in Algeria and Kenya. Fossils of aardvarks have been dated back 5 million years and have been found as far as Europe and the Near East. Researchers once thought a creature in Madagascar called Plesiorycteropus was a relative. However, molecular evidence now shows it was actually a relative of golden moles that reached a similar appearance through convergent evolution.
The aardvark plays a vital role in its ecosystem through its behavior and diet. By digging deep burrows, they create favorable environments for various other plants and animals to live in. They also share a symbiotic relationship with the aardvark cucumber. The aardvark eats the subterranean fruit for moisture and then spreads the seeds through its waste. The fertile, loose soil near their burrows helps these seeds grow rapidly. 
In terms of size and scale, the aardvark is a substantial creature. An adult can weigh up to 68 kilograms. Its total length can reach about 1.3 meters when including its tail, which can be up to 40 centimeters long. They are found across much of the southern two-thirds of the African continent. They thrive in savannas, grasslands, and woodlands, but they avoid rocky terrain and swamp forests. This is because high water tables in swamps make it difficult to dig deep enough burrows.
