The Arsinoitherium was a large, heavy animal from long ago. 

This beast looked a bit like a rhinoceros. However, it was not a rhino. It was actually a close relative of elephants and manatees. Manatees are large water animals.
The most famous part of this animal was its head. It had two very large horns above its nose. It also had two small, knob-like horns over its eyes. Both males and females had these horns. Scientists think the horns might have been covered in keratin. Keratin is the same stuff that makes up your hair and nails.
Arsinoitherium was built to carry a lot of weight. Its legs were thick and strong like pillars.

The name also uses a Greek word that means "beast." One famous species, A. zitteli, was named after a German scientist named Karl Alfred Ritter von Zittel. He was a very important person in the study of fossils in Egypt. Many fossils have been found in the Faiyum Oasis region.
There were different types of these heavy animals. One species was called A. zitteli. An adult of this type stood 1.75 meters tall at the shoulders. They could weigh between 510 and 1,500 kilograms. Another species, A. giganteum, was even larger. It lived in the Ethiopian highlands about 27 million years ago. This huge animal could weigh as much as 1,960 kilograms. Its teeth were much larger than the teeth of A. zitteli.
Finding these fossils helps us see what the ancient world was like. 
Arsinoitherium was a massive, extinct genus of mammal. It belonged to an extinct order called Embrithopoda. While these animals looked like rhinoceroses, they were not related to them. Instead, their closest living relatives are elephants and manatees. These creatures were herbivores, meaning they ate plants. They lived in North Africa during the Late Eocene and Early Oligocene epochs. This was between 36 and 30 million years ago. 
The body of Arsinoitherium was built for heavy weight. Scientists call this graviportal limb structure. This means their legs were thick and pillar-like to support their mass. Their limbs included a robust humerus, radius, and ulna. The bones were very strong to handle their heavy bodies. For example, the ulna was much thicker than the radius. Their feet were plantigrade, which means they walked with their soles flat on the ground.
The most striking part of Arsinoitherium was its skull. It featured two enormous horns located above the nose. There was also a second pair of small, knob-like horns over the eyes. These large horns grew from the fronto-nasal region of the skull. The frontal bone supported the small horns and part of the large ones. The nasal bone supported the rest of the large horn bases. Inside, the horns were hollow and connected to the frontal sinus system. Scientists believe these bony cores were covered in a keratin sheath. 
There were different species within this genus with different sizes. The most famous is Arsinoitherium zitteli. An adult of this species stood about 1.75 meters tall at the shoulders. It could weigh between 510 and 1,500 kilograms. Another species is Arsinoitherium giganteum. This species lived in the Ethiopian highlands about 27 million years ago. It was much larger than A. zitteli. It could weigh between 1,760 and 1,960 kilograms.
Researchers have studied these animals to understand their lives. Hugh John Llewellyn Beadnell named the genus in 1902. He named it after Pharaoh Arsinoe II and the Greek word for beast. The species A. zitteli was named for paleontologist Karl Alfred Ritter von Zittel. Most complete skeletons were found in the Faiyum Oasis. However, fossils have also been found in places like Romania and Turkey. 
We can learn about their diet by looking at their teeth. Their teeth were hypsodont, which means they had very high crowns. The molars were bilophodont, meaning they had two high transverse columns. This structure is similar to the teeth of modern elephants and tapirs. These teeth helped them process plants. Because of their tooth shape, scientists believe they were browsers. This means they likely ate leaves and shrubs from the forest. 
Arsinoitherium lived in a very wet and lush world. They inhabited tropical rainforests and the edges of mangrove swamps. They lived alongside many other ancient animals. These included giant snakes called Gigantophis and various types of crocodiles. They also shared the water with fish like sawfish and catfish. While some think they might have been semi-aquatic, isotope analysis suggests they were mostly terrestrial. They were a key part of the ancient African ecosystem.
