The gelada is a very special kind of monkey.

It lives only in the high mountains of Ethiopia. These mountains have deep gorges and large grasslands.

Most monkeys like to live in trees. However, the gelada is largely terrestrial. This means it spends most of its time on the ground. It is the only living member of its group, called the genus Theropithecus. This name comes from Greek words that mean "beast-ape." Even though people often call them gelada baboons, scientists say this is not quite right.

Geladas have a very unique way of eating and moving. They are graminivores, which means they mainly eat grass.

Grass makes up as much as 90% of what they eat. They use small, sturdy fingers to pull at blades of grass. They also use small teeth to chew it. When they eat, they use a special shuffle gait. They squat down and slide their feet along the ground without standing up. This way of moving keeps their rump hidden. Because they stay low, their bright chest patches stay easy to see.

These monkeys have very distinct looks that help us tell them apart. They have coarse, brown hair and dark faces. Adult males are much larger than females.

A male might weigh 18.5 kg, while a female weighs about 11 kg. Males have a bright red patch on their chest shaped like an hourglass. Females also have a patch of skin on their chests. During certain times, a female's patch can look like a necklace of fluid-filled blisters.

This patch is a way for them to communicate with others.

Life for a gelada is all about living in big, organized groups.

The smallest group is a reproductive unit. This unit has a few males and many females. These females are often close relatives who stay together for life. They have strong bonds and spend time grooming each other.

These small units join together to form larger bands. Many bands then join to form a community. This complex social structure helps them live safely in the wild. Even their sounds are special. Their vocalizations are thought to be almost as complex as human speech.

It is important to look after these monkeys because their numbers have changed. In the 1970s, there were about 440,000 geladas. By 2008, that number had dropped to 200,000. Even with this loss, they are listed as a species of "least concern." This means they are not currently at risk of dying out. They face many dangers in the mountains, like leopards and hyenas. They also have to deal with frost and hailstorms. By watching how they live, we can learn more about how animals thrive in high places.
