They live in areas with fewer predators than other baboons. This makes their home a safe place to grow. They are very good at living in dry lands.

These baboons look very different depending on if they are male or female.

This is called sexual dimorphism. Males grow a silver-white mane and mantle around their necks. They usually grow this mane at ten years old. Males are also nearly twice as large as the females. Females are brown all over with reddish or dark faces. Infants start out dark brown or black. They lighten up after about one year.

These monkeys have a very unusual way of living together.

They use a four-level social system. First, they live in small groups called harems. A harem has one male and up to ten females. These harems join together to form clans. Two to four clans then form a band of up to 400 baboons. Finally, several bands may come together to form a large troop.

Finding food and water is a big job in the dry desert.

Hamadryas baboons are omnivores. This means they eat both plants and animals. In wet seasons, they eat blossoms, seeds, and acacia leaves. In dry seasons, they eat sisal leaves and roots. They also eat insects, spiders, worms, and even small antelope. They must find waterholes to stay healthy. If they do not have water, their body temperature rises quickly.

Long ago, these baboons were very important to the ancient Egyptians.

They were considered sacred animals. They appeared in art as gods like Thoth. Thoth was a powerful god who acted as a scribe. Some people even thought the baboons were worshiping the sun. Today, these monkeys face threats from losing their land to farms. We can still find them in places like Ethiopia and Somalia.
