Hippoidea

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sand crabs are special animals. They belong to a group called Hippoidea. Most people call them mole crabs. They live on sandy beaches all over the world. You can find them almost anywhere except the poles.

These crabs have a unique way of moving. Most crabs walk on the ground. Sand crabs cannot walk. Instead, they use their legs to dig. They dig deep into the sand to hide. Some crabs in the Hippidae family use uropods to swim. Uropods are parts at the back of the body. They beat these parts to move through water.

Scientists study how these crabs are related to others. They belong to a large group called Anomura. This group includes hermit crabs and squat lobsters. Sand crabs are a very old group. Their fossils go back to the Cretaceous period. That is a very long time ago. Some tiny sand crab larvae live in cold Antarctic waters. There are not many sandy beaches there. Still, these small creatures can live in the cold.
