These animals are shaped like a mix of a crab and a lobster. Their bodies are flat from top to bottom. They have a long tail called a pleon. This tail curls under their main body. Their main body part is called a cephalothorax. This part is covered by a hard shell called a carapace. Some squat lobsters have a pointy part on their shell called a rostrum. Many species also have tiny hairs called setae. These hairs can sometimes look shiny.

Squat lobsters have many different parts. They have two pairs of antennae. They also have five pairs of legs called pereiopods. The first pair of legs are very large. These are called chelipeds. They end in big claws. These claws can be six times longer than the body! They use these claws to catch food. They also use them to look big to enemies.

Many squat lobsters live in big groups. They like to find spots with lots of food. They might gather near shipwrecks or deep sea vents.
