Males use this big claw to wave at females. This is called a waving display. They also use the claw to fight for territory. If a male loses a claw, he can grow it back. He does this through ecdysis, which is the way crabs shed their old shells to grow. A new claw grows during the next molt.

Crabs dig many holes in the mud. Some are temporary holes for hiding. Males also build breeding burrows. Females like wide burrows for their eggs. Crabs eat almost anything. They pick up mud and sift through it for food. They leave small sand balls near their holes. This helps move nutrients in the soil.
