Many land crabs still need the sea. They must go back to the water to release their eggs. This means they let their eggs go in the water. Some crabs live far from the sea. They must make a big trip every year. These trips are called migrations.

The red crab lives on Christmas Island. They move when the monsoon winds come. They move in huge groups. They look like a living carpet. These crabs can travel far in one day. A few crabs are different. Some mothers carry their eggs. The eggs grow into tiny crabs while the mother holds them. This is called direct development. These crabs do not need water to breed. Some crabs also live in fresh water. These are called freshwater crabs. They are often similar to land crabs.
