These crabs are very special. They can live in many places.
Most crabs live in the water. But some crabs live on land. These are called terrestrial crabs. 

Many crabs live in the sea. However, some groups have changed to live on land. These are called terrestrial crabs. 

Most land crabs still need water. They must return to the sea to release their eggs. This is a very important step for their life. Some crabs live many kilometres away from the ocean. They must travel back to the sea every year. This big trip is called a migration. 
We can learn about these crabs by looking at different groups. The family Potamidae mostly has freshwater crabs. Some of these, like the genus Nanhaipotamon, are semiterrestrial. This means they live partly on land. The genus Tiwaripotamon can sometimes live without fresh water to breed. These changes happen over a long time. It is a way for crabs to find new homes. 
The Christmas Island red crab is a famous example. Its scientific name is Gecarcoidea natalis. These crabs migrate after the Indian Ocean monsoon. They move in such huge numbers they look like a living carpet. They can travel quite far in a single day. In total, they can travel many kilometres. 
Land crabs are often like freshwater crabs. The changes needed for fresh water help them live on land. This is called a preadaptation. On some oceanic islands, these crabs are at the top of the energy pyramid. This means they are very important to their environment. 
Terrestrial crabs are various lineages of crabs that have evolved to live mostly on land. 
Most terrestrial crabs still maintain a strong connection to the water. They exist on a continuum of terrestriality. This means they fall on a scale between being fully aquatic and fully terrestrial. Most land-adapted crabs must still return to water to release their eggs. Without this water, they cannot complete their reproductive cycle. This requirement dictates much of their behavior and movement.
Some species live many kilometers away from the sea. These crabs must perform annual migrations to reach the ocean. A famous example is the Christmas Island red crab, or Gecarcoidea natalis. These crabs migrate following the Indian Ocean monsoon. They move in such massive numbers that they form a "living carpet" of crabs. 
A few specific groups have found ways to avoid the need for water. Certain Geosesarma species use a process called direct development. In this process, the mother carries the eggs until they hatch. The eggs become tiny, fully developed crabs inside the mother. Because of this, these specific crabs do not need access to water to breed. This is a significant biological difference from most other crab species.
Other families show different levels of land adaptation. The family Potamidae mostly consists of freshwater crabs. Some members, such as the genus Nanhaipotamon, have developed a semiterrestrial life history. This means they live partly on land and partly in water. The genus Tiwaripotamon is even more specialized. These crabs can sometimes be independent of fresh water for reproduction. These changes show how crabs slowly move toward land life.
Many terrestrial crabs are biologically similar to freshwater crabs. This is due to a concept called preadaptation. The physiological changes needed to live in fresh water act as preadaptations for living on land. This means the traits that helped them survive in rivers also help them survive on land. On some oceanic islands, these crabs are very important to the ecosystem. They often occupy the top of the energy pyramid. 
We can see the diversity of these animals by looking at different sizes and types. The coconut crab, or Birgus latro, is a terrestrial hermit crab. It is a very large animal. In fact, it is the largest terrestrial invertebrate in the world.
