They can travel up to 15 meters in a single day. In total, they can travel up to 1500 meters during their journey.

A few specific groups have found ways to avoid the need for water. Certain Geosesarma species use a process called direct development. In this process, the mother carries the eggs until they hatch. The eggs become tiny, fully developed crabs inside the mother. Because of this, these specific crabs do not need access to water to breed. This is a significant biological difference from most other crab species.

Other families show different levels of land adaptation. The family Potamidae mostly consists of freshwater crabs. Some members, such as the genus Nanhaipotamon, have developed a semiterrestrial life history. This means they live partly on land and partly in water.
