The coconut crab is a giant crab that lives on land.

It is the largest land-living arthropod, which is a group of animals with hard outer shells. These crabs can grow very large. Their legs can spread out to be more than one meter wide. They live on islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Young crabs live in snail shells for safety. As they grow up, they stop using shells. Instead, they grow a tough, hard belly. This hard part is called an exoskeleton.

This helps them stay safe on land and keeps them from drying out.

Because they live on land, they need a new way to breathe. They use special organs called branchiostegal lungs. These lungs help them take oxygen from the air. They use their tiny back legs to keep these lungs wet.

If they stay in water for too long, they will drown.

These crabs have a great sense of smell. They use it to find food like nuts, seeds, and fruit. They are also called robber crabs. This is because they might find food on the ground and carry it away.

Some crabs can live for over 60 years.
