The coconut crab is a truly giant creature. It is the largest living terrestrial arthropod in the world. This means it is the biggest land-dwelling animal with a hard outer shell.

These crabs can grow very large indeed. Their weight can reach up to 4 kilograms. The distance from one leg tip to another can be more than 1 meter wide. They are often called robber crabs or palm thieves. This name comes from how they find and carry away food left on the ground.

Living on land requires special ways to work. Young crabs act like other hermit crabs by living in snail shells. As they grow, they stop carrying shells and develop a tough abdomen. This hard belly is part of their exoskeleton, which is made of chitin and calcium carbonate.

To breathe, they use special organs called branchiostegal lungs. These lungs take oxygen from the air instead of water. The crabs use their tiny back legs to keep these organs moist. If they stay in the water for more than one hour, they will drown.

Scientists have studied these crabs for a very long time. Explorers like Francis Drake saw them around 1580. William Dampier also saw them around 1688. In 1767, Carl Linnaeus named the species Cancer latro. The name comes from the Latin word for robber. Later, in 1816, William Elford Leach created the genus Birgus. This is the name we use today, Birgus latro.

These crabs live in many different places. You can find them on islands across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Their range goes as far west as Zanzibar. It goes as far east as the Pitcairn Islands.

They like to live where coconut palms grow. They can be orange-red or even purplish blue. In the Seychelles, many crabs are red. In Japan, people call them palm crabs. They have a very long life. Some may live for over 60 years. Some might even live for 120 years to reach full size.

Learning about the coconut crab helps us understand how animals change to fit their homes. Their sense of smell is a great example. They have special parts on their antennae to find food. This is very similar to how insects find things in the air.

They use this smell to find fruit, nuts, and seeds. They might even find rotting meat or bananas. Even though they are called coconut crabs, coconuts are not a huge part of what they eat. They mostly just find food that is easy to reach on the ground.
