Porcelain crabs look like true crabs. But they are actually a different kind of animal. They have very flat bodies. This shape helps them hide in cracks in rocks.

These animals are very fragile. They often drop a limb to escape from a predator. This is how they got their name. A lost limb can grow back over time. They use large chelae, or claws, to fight for space. They do not use these claws to catch food. Instead, they use long setae to eat. Setae are feathery hairs on their mouthparts. These hairs comb tiny bits of food from the water.

Porcelain crabs live in almost all the world's oceans. They do not live in the Arctic or Antarctic oceans. Some species live under rocks on beaches. One kind lives inside shells with hermit crabs. These crabs first appeared a long time ago. Fossils show they lived during the Late Jurassic epoch. This was 145 to 152 million years ago. There are many different types of porcelain crabs in the sea today.
