You can find them in the sea, in fresh water, and on land. There are over 10,000 different kinds of isopods in the world.

Most isopods have a hard outer shell. This shell is made of many overlapping plates. These plates help the animal stay safe. It also helps them stay flexible. Isopods have seven pairs of legs. These legs are all about the same size and shape. This is why their name means "equal foot."

Some isopods live on the ocean floor. They mostly crawl along the bottom. Other isopods live on land. These are often called woodlice. They like to stay in cool and damp places. Some can roll into a tight ball to stay safe. This is called volvation.

Isopods eat many different things. Some eat dead plants or animals. This helps clean the earth. Others are predators that hunt. A few types are parasites. They live on other animals, like fish. Some isopods are tiny. Others, like the giant isopod, can grow very large.
