Ostraciidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some fish look like they are living inside tiny, hard boxes. These fish belong to a group called Ostraciidae. People also call them boxfishes, cowfishes, or trunkfishes.

This group is closely related to pufferfishes and filefishes. They are very special because of their unique bodies. Their name comes from the genus Ostracion. This name actually means "little box."

It is a perfect name for their shape.

These fish have a very clever way of staying safe. Their scales are shaped like hexagons. These plates are like pieces of a honeycomb. The scales fuse together into one solid shell. This hard shell is called a carapace.

Their fins, tail, eyes, and mouth stick out from this shell. Because the shell is so heavy, they move slowly. They swim by rowing through the water. This armor makes it hard for other fish to eat them.

Some boxfishes have even more ways to defend themselves. The genus Lactophrys can release poison from its skin.

They do this when they feel stress. One type of toxin is called pahutoxin. This is a water-soluble chemical found in their mucus. When the fish releases this mucus, it dissolves in the water. It can then negatively affect other fish nearby. This chemical acts much like a detergent would.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. A man named Constantine Samuel Rafinesque first proposed the family in 1810.

Today, we know there are about 23 to 25 different species. These species live in six different genera. These include names like Acanthostracion and Tetrosomus. The scrawled cowfish, Acanthostracion quadricornis, is one example. It can grow quite large in certain waters. Most boxfishes live in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans.

You can see how these fish are like little underwater tanks. Just as a tank protects what is inside, the carapace protects the fish.

Even their colors and patterns are interesting. Many have bright colors or honeycomb patterns on their skin. Young fish are often more rounded than the square adults. They often have much brighter colors too.

It is amazing how they use shape and chemistry to survive.
