They belong to the family Centriscidae. These fish are very small and thin. They are flattened from side to side. Many look nearly transparent to the eye. They have long snouts on their faces. A thin dark stripe runs along their bodies. This stripe makes them look like shrimp.

This look helps them blend in well.

These fish have a very special way of moving. They swim in a synchronized manner. This means they move together in a group. They swim with their heads pointing down. Their tails point up toward the surface.

The razorfish uses this to hide. It swims among the spines of sea urchins. Its head-down position helps it stay safe. This is a clever way to stay hidden.

People have studied these fish for a long time. Scientists named different kinds of them in different years. For example, Bianconi named a species in 1855. Günther named the razorfish in 1861. Richardson named the banded bellowsfish in 1846. De Vis named the smooth razorfish in 1885. Linnaeus named the grooved razorfish in 1758.

It lives from the Indian Ocean to Hawaii. It likes sea grass and coral reefs. The banded bellowsfish is a different kind. It lives in deeper southern oceans. It can reach a length of 11 inches. It is listed as a species of Least Concern.

You might recognize some of their features from other things. The razorfish has bony plates on its back. These plates cover its golden-yellow body. They even go over the tail fin. The tail fin ends in a sharp spine. This makes the fish look like a razor.

They are built to live in a prickly world. Their bodies help them navigate through sharp sea urchins.
