They belong to groups called decapod crustaceans. Many of these shrimp belong to the Hippolytidae family. Some belong to the Palaemonidae family as well. Other families like Alpheidae also have cleaner shrimp. These shrimp live in a cleaning symbiosis. This is a way two animals help each other. The shrimp get food from the parasites they eat. The fish get to stay healthy and clean.

The cleaning way it works is very helpful for fish. First, a fish swims to a cleaning station. The shrimp find parasites on the fish's body. They eat these tiny pests for nutrition. The shrimp also eat mucus from fish wounds. This eating helps the fish heal faster. It can even stop infections from starting. This service helps to reduce stress for the fish. It is a win for both animals.

Scientists study how these shrimp act on the reef. They look at how shrimp and fish interact. A study in Marine Biology shared how they help. The study was published in August 2018. Researchers found that shrimp are true cleaners. They help injured fish heal much better. They work alongside cleaner fish like the wrasse. Sometimes many shrimp live in one small area. Up to 25 shrimp may live together.

Different shrimp have different ways of working. The Pacific cleaner shrimp is named Lysmata amboinensis. The spotted Periclimenes magnificus is another type. The banded coral shrimp is named Stenopus hispidus. Some shrimp, like Urocaridella, live in caves. They might not work with other animals. One type is called Urocaridella antonbruunii. This shrimp cleans fish while they sleep at night. This helps them avoid competition during the day.

You might see these shrimp in a tank. Many people keep them in saltwater aquaria. They have a very bright appearance. Their pretty colors make them fun to watch. When a fish swims near, shrimp dance. They perform a rocking dance from side to side. They dance more often if they are hungry. This shows they are competing for food. It is a busy life on the reef.
