Halfbeaks are a large family of fish found in warm waters.

They live in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Some also live in rivers or estuaries. These fish are known as forage fish. This means they are a key food source for others. They are eaten by sharks, mackerels, and billfish. This makes them an important link in the ocean food web.

These fish have a very special way of working. Their bodies are streamlined to help them swim in open water. Their eyes and nostrils are at the top of their heads. This helps them see and breathe at the surface. The upper jaw can move, but the lower jaw stays still. Their lower jaw is much longer than the upper one. This is why they are called halfbeaks. Most species have a bright red or orange tip on that long jaw.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described a halfbeak in 1758. He named it Esox brasiliensis. Later, Peter Forsskål described two more species in 1775. In 1816, Georges Cuvier created the genus Hemiramphus. Theodore Nicholas Gill later named the whole family Hemiramphidae in 1859. The name comes from Greek words. "Hemi" means half and "rhamphos" means beak.

There are many different kinds of halfbeaks today. There are eight genera and about 60 different species. One species, Euleptorhampus viridis, can grow quite large. Some halfbeaks, like Euleptorhamphus velox, can even jump and glide. They do this to move across the water surface. Halfbeaks also have a unique bone structure. Their third pair of upper pharyngeal bones is fused into a plate. This is a trait that helps identify them.

Halfbeaks are part of a larger group of fish. They are closely related to flyingfishes and needlefishes. These fish all belong to the order Beloniformes. Halfbeaks are often found in large groups called schools. They stay near the surface at night. During the day, they often swim near the sea floor. They like to hide among seagrasses. This helps them stay safe from predators.
