They are part of the Belonidae family. Most of these fish live in the salty ocean. However, some types live in brackish or fresh water too. For example, the genus Strongylura lives in many environments. Other groups like Belonion only live in fresh water. These fish are important parts of the sea. They are often found in warm, subtropical waters. Some also live in cooler, temperate waters during the winter.

These fish have a very special way of working. Their most famous part is a long, narrow beak. This beak is filled with many sharp teeth. When they are young, their beaks look different. The upper jaw is very small in juveniles. These young fish eat tiny plankton. Once the upper jaw grows to full length, they change their diet. They begin to hunt smaller fish instead. They also eat krill, insects, and small swimming crustaceans. They even use a trick called Snell's Window to hunt. Light bends as it moves through the water. This makes the needlefish look blurry to its prey. This helps them get very close before they strike.

People have studied these fish for a long time. In Europe, the name "garfish" was once used for the species Belone belone. Later, in the 18th century, European settlers used that same name for different fish in North America. These North American fish are called gars. Even though they look similar, needlefish and true gars are not closely related. Scientists also group needlefish in the order Beloniformes. They belong to a larger group called the superfamily Scomberesocoidea. This group includes the sauries, which are in the family Scomberesocidae.

There are many interesting facts about how they live. Needlefish can jump up to 1.5 meters out of the water. They often swim in schools. In the North Atlantic, Belone belone swims with tuna. Some small ones have even been seen in the Mediterranean Sea. One small species is Xenentodon cancila from Southeast Asia. It grows to about 40 cm long. People sometimes keep it in aquariums. However, it is a delicate fish for advanced owners.

Because they swim at the surface, needlefish can be a danger. They often leap over the decks of small boats. Artificial lights at night can make them very excited. They might dive toward the light at high speeds. This can cause deep wounds with their sharp beaks. In the Pacific, some communities see them as a bigger risk than sharks. Many serious injuries have happened over the years. In 1977, a boy in Hawaii was killed by a jumping fish. In 2007, a boy in Vietnam died from a beak strike. In 2024, a fisherman in the Philippines also died after being pierced.
