Most needlefish live in the ocean. Some live in rivers or salty water. They swim near the surface of the sea. Young needlefish eat plankton. Plankton are tiny bits of life in the water. Once their beak grows, they eat small fish. They also eat shrimp and insects.

Needlefish are clever hunters. They use a trick called Snell's Window. Light bends when it goes through water. This makes the fish look blurry to their prey. This helps them get very close before they strike.

These fish can jump fast. They can leap up to 1.5 meters. At night, they jump toward bright lights. This can be dangerous for people. Their sharp beaks can cause deep wounds. Some people have been hurt or killed by these jumps.
