Beloniformes

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Beloniformes is a group of fish. There are about 264 species in this group. Most live in the salty sea. A few live in fresh water.

These fish live near the top of the water. Most have streamlined bodies. This means they are shaped to swim fast. They eat algae, plankton, or small animals. Some even eat other fish.

Many of these fish have special jaws. Halfbeaks have a long lower jaw. In needlefish and sauries, both jaws grow long. Young needlefish start as halfbeaks first.

Flyingfishes are different. They lose their long lower jaw as they grow.

Scientists study these fish to learn about history. They look at fossils to see old types. Some fossils come from a place in Italy. These fossils are from the Early Eocene time.

Other fossils come from California. They come from a time called the Late Miocene. These fish are very useful to people too.
