They live in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They also live in rivers and estuaries. These fish get their name from their unique mouths. Their lower jaws are much longer than their upper jaws. Most species have bright red or orange tips on these jaws.

Halfbeaks are streamlined to swim well in open water. This shape helps them move quickly. They often live in large groups called schools. Many halfbeaks stay near the water's surface. Some can even jump and glide through the air!

Halfbeaks eat many different things. They eat plants, algae, and tiny sea animals like plankton. Some species change what they eat during different seasons. They are also food for other fish. Sharks, mackerel, and billfish all eat halfbeaks. This makes them a very important part of the ocean food web. People also catch them for food in some places. They can be eaten fresh or dried.
