They do not have jaws. Instead, they have a round, sucking mouth.

They use this mouth to stick to rocks or other fish. Some lampreys are hunters. They use a tongue to scrape flesh from other fish.

Other adult lampreys do not eat at all. They live off power they saved when they were young.

Most lampreys spend a long time as larvae. We call these young ones ammocoetes.

They live in mud or silt on the bottom of water. They eat tiny bits of food that float by. This stage can last for eight years! Later, they go through a change called metamorphosis. During this time, they do not eat.

Lampreys have many cool body parts. They have a skeleton made of cartilage. This is a soft, bendy material. They also have four eyes. Most other fish only have two. Some lampreys use countershading to hide. They have dark backs and light bellies. This helps them blend in with the water.
