It has a long body like an eel. It does not have paired fins. Its mouth is round and works like a sucker.

Inside its mouth are many rows of sharp teeth. It also has a sharp tongue.

This fish is a parasite. A parasite is a living thing that lives on or in another. The lamprey uses its sucker mouth to stick to a fish. It uses its tongue to rasp away tissue. It also makes a fluid called lamphredin. This fluid stops the victim's blood from clotting. This helps the lamprey feed. One lamprey can kill 40 pounds of fish.

Sea lampreys live in the ocean and rivers. They are anadromous. This means they live in the sea but swim up rivers to spawn. Spawning is when they lay eggs. After they lay eggs, the adults die.

The young larvae live in sand and silt. They grow for a few years before they move to the sea.
