Anaspids were a group of small, jawless fish. They lived in the sea a long time ago.

They lived from the Silurian period to the Devonian period. Most fish back then had heavy bony shields for armor. Anaspids were different because they lacked these shields. Their name means "shieldless ones."

Instead of armor, their bodies had many small scales. Some had scales that looked like tiles. These scales were made of aspidine. Aspidine is a type of bony tissue.

Anaspids had big eyes on the sides of their heads. They also had many holes for breathing. These gill openings were in rows on each side. Most fish had between 6 and 15 pairs of these holes.

A special part of their body was a large spine. This spine had three parts, like a star. It sat just behind the breathing holes. Some anaspids had long fins that looked like ribbons. Other types had shorter fins in pairs. Scientists think they might be related to lampreys. Lampreys are fish that do not have jaws.
