A lancelet is a small animal that looks like a fish.

They live on the seafloor. Most lancelets like to hide in coarse sand. One kind, from Florida, likes fine sand instead.

Lancelets eat by filtering water. They stay buried and only show their front end. They use a mucous sheet to trap tiny food called plankton.

These animals have a special rod in their back. This is called a notochord. It helps their bodies stay stiff. It is different from a spine in a fish. The notochord also goes into the head. This is why their group is called Cephalochordata. The name means "head chord."

Some lancelets can even glow. They have green fluorescent proteins in their bodies. This is a type of light that glows green.

This light might help them attract food. It might also protect them from bright light. Scientists use these glowing parts to study cells in labs. In Asia, some people eat lancelets for food. In Japan, some kinds are on a list of animals to protect.
