These saltwater fish live in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. You might find them in the Atlantic Ocean or the Red Sea. They also live in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Most barracudas stay near the top of the water. They like to swim near coral reefs and sea grasses.

Many people enjoy catching them for sport fishing.

These fish have a very special way of hunting for food.

They rely on their eyesight to find prey in the water. A barracuda looks for things that move or have unusual colors. They also watch for things that glint or shine. Once they pick a target, they use short bursts of speed to attack. Their long tails and fins help them dash forward quickly. They often swim head-first into schools of fish to bite them.

A man named Constantine Samuel Rafinesque named the family Sphyraenidae in 1815. The name "barracuda" comes from the Spanish language. It might even come from an older word from the Cariban people. There are 26 different species in the genus Sphyraena. Some species, like the great barracuda, are very well known. Even fossil species like Sphyraena bolcensis have been found by researchers.

Barracudas come in many different shapes and sizes.

Some species can grow up to 65 inches long. For example, Sphyraena sphyraena grows large in the Mediterranean Sea. Another species, Sphyraena picudilla, lives from North Carolina to Brazil. Most barracudas have dark gray, green, white, or blue bodies. They usually have silvery sides and a white belly. This coloring helps them hide from other fish. Some species even have black spots or dark bars on their sides.

Humans interact with barracudas in many different ways.

Many people eat barracuda as food, such as fillets or steaks. In West Africa, people smoke them for use in delicious soups. In Thailand, the meat is used in curry or steamed in leaves. Some people also fish for them as a fun hobby. While they are mostly solitary, young fish often swim in groups. This behavior helps them move schools of fish into small areas to eat.
