Spiny lobsters are fascinating marine animals found in warm seas.

You can find them in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea. Many people call them langustas or rock lobsters. In places like Australia and New Zealand, they are called crayfish. They belong to a group of animals called decapod crustaceans. These creatures live in crevices within rocks and coral reefs.

They usually come out at night to find food. They like to eat snails, clams, crabs, and sea urchins.

These animals have a very special way of moving and sensing the world. Spiny lobsters use their long antennae to stay in contact with each other. This helps them stay together in social groups. Sometimes, they move in huge lines across the sea floor. These lines can be more than 50 lobsters long. They navigate the ocean using smell and taste. They can even detect the Earth's magnetic field to find their way.

This helps them travel through the vast, dark ocean.

To protect themselves, spiny lobsters have a unique way of making noise. They have a special part on their antennae called a plectrum. They rub this against a smooth part of their shell called a file. This creates a loud, rasping sound to scare away predators. This method of making sound is unique in the animal kingdom. It works even after they molt, which is when they shed their old shell. Most other animals must wait for a new shell to make sounds. This keeps them safe even when they are most vulnerable.

Scientists have studied these creatures for a long time. A fossil of a spiny lobster was found in 1995. This fossil was discovered near El Espiñal in Chiapas, Mexico. It is 110 million years old. Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico named it Palinurus palaecosi. This ancient lobster is closely related to species living near Africa today. There are about 60 living species in 12 different genera.

Many of these names, like Palinurus, come from ancient history.

Spiny lobsters are quite different from the true lobsters you might see in a restaurant. True lobsters have large claws on their legs, but spiny lobsters do not. Instead, spiny lobsters have very long, thick, and spiny antennae. Their meat is often described as having a sweet and delicate flavor. Many people enjoy eating them in Asian styles like sashimi. In the Bahamas, they are a very important food export. They are a big part of the local economy.
