A squid is a fascinating sea animal with a soft, long body.

These creatures are part of a group called molluscs. Most squids have eight arms and two very long tentacles. They use these tentacles to grab prey quickly. Then, their eight arms hold and control the food. A hard beak at the center cuts the food into small chunks.

Inside their soft bodies, they have a small, thin structure called a pen. This pen is made of chitin, which is a tough material. It acts like a tiny internal skeleton to support their mantle.

Moving through the ocean is a very active way of life for a squid. They use a method called jet propulsion to swim fast.

To do this, they suck water into their mantle cavity. Then, they push that water out through a tube called a funnel. By turning the funnel, they can change their direction. Some species are so fast they can even fly out of the water for short distances. They use their large, advanced eyes to find prey while they swim.

Squid have a long history in our world. They first branched off from other cephalopods during the Jurassic period. They became very successful around 100 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous.

Scientists find it hard to study ancient squid because their bodies are so soft. They decay easily, so fossils are very rare. However, researchers have found fossilized squid beaks in Japan. These beaks come from the Yezo Group. Using special scanning tools, scientists can now see these tiny, fragile pieces of history.

Nature has given squid many clever ways to stay safe. They can change their skin color to match their surroundings. This is done using tiny parts called chromatophores.

Some squids also use bioluminescence, which means they can make their own light. The Hawaiian bobtail squid uses special bacteria to create light. This light helps them hide from predators by matching the light from above. If a predator gets too close, a squid can spray a dark cloud of ink. This ink cloud helps them escape into the dark water.

Squid are an important part of the ocean's food web. They are eaten by many animals like sharks, seals, and sperm whales.

Humans also interact with them in many ways. Many people around the world eat squid in different cuisines. You might know it as calamari on a menu. They have also been part of human stories for a very long time. Tales of giant squid and sea monsters have appeared in literature since classical times.
