In many English-speaking places, people use the name calamari to describe squid dishes. You can eat almost every part of this sea creature. The body, known as the mantle, is very useful for cooking. People also eat the arms, the tentacles, and even the black ink.

The only parts that are not eaten are the beak and the gladius, which is also called a pen. Because it is so versatile, squid is a favorite in many different cultures.

There are many ways to prepare squid for a meal. One common way is to coat rings in batter and fry them in oil. In the Mediterranean, this is often done very quickly to keep the meat tender. In other places, squid is grilled whole over a fire or stuffed with vegetables and meat.

Some chefs use the black ink to make dark, flavorful sauces for pasta or rice. In Korea, people might serve fresh squid with mustard, soy sauce, or chili sauce. You can even find dried, shredded squid that people eat as a chewy snack. Each method changes how the squid tastes and feels.

People have been eating squid for a very long time. The word calamari comes from several languages like Italian and Greek. These names actually come from a Latin word meaning an ink pot or a pen case. This is because the squid's ink looks like the fluid used for writing.

In the United States, researchers even worked to make squid more popular in the 1970s. They even built a special machine at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to help clean the squid. This helped people see squid as a good source of protein for their meals.

Different countries have special names and ways to serve squid. In Taiwan, people use different names for squid based on their size and species. They might eat neritic squid rice noodles in the city of Tainan.

In the Philippines, a dish called adobong pusit uses ink to create a tangy sauce. In Korea, a dish called ojingeo-jeot uses spicy chili powder and vegetables. Even in Spain, you can find squid served as rabas, which are cut into straight strips. These many styles show how much people value this seafood.

Squid is a very healthy food for the human body. It is high in protein and contains phosphorus. It also has healthy fats called omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats are very good for you. However, some people have allergies to calamari. This happens because of a protein called tropomyosin found in molluscs. It is important for people with allergies to be careful when eating seafood.
