Beaked whales are a special group of sea mammals. They belong to a family called Ziphiidae.

These whales are hard to study because they are very shy. They also live in the deep parts of the ocean. Scientists only know a few of the 24 different species well. Some new species might even be found near Mexico. Most beaked whales are moderate in size. They have a shape that looks like they have a beak.

This beak is a feature they share with many dolphins.

These whales have a very interesting way of eating. They use something called suction feeding to catch their meals. Instead of using teeth to grab food, they suck it into their mouths. They have special grooves under their throats that help with this. When they want to eat, they move their tongues very quickly. This movement makes the pressure in their mouth drop. The water and the food get sucked inside right away. They mostly eat squid and fish that live near the sea floor.

Many beaked whales have very few teeth. Most species only have one or two pairs of teeth. These teeth look like long tusks. In most species, only the males have these visible teeth. The females do not have teeth that grow out of their gums. Scientists think males might use these tusks for fighting. In 2008, researchers from Oregon State University studied their DNA. They found that these teeth are like the antlers on a deer. They are a special feature for males to help them find mates.

Beaked whales are some of the best divers in the world. They can go much deeper than many other animals. A Cuvier's beaked whale once stayed underwater for 222 minutes!

Another study showed one diving down to 2,992 meters. To stay underwater so long, their bodies do amazing things. Their heart rates slow down to save oxygen. They also have large spleens and livers to help filter their blood. Their bodies even have a way to hold their fins tight to stay streamlined while they dive.

We have known about beaked whales for a long time. The oldest fossils of these whales are about 15 million years old. This means they lived during a time called the Miocene. Scientists have found many old skulls in places like South Africa and Iberia. These fossils show that beaked whales have been changing for millions of years. Even though they are very old, they are still a mystery. We are still learning about how they live in the deep, dark ocean.
