Marine mammals are a diverse group of animals. They all rely on the ocean to survive.

This group includes whales, seals, sea otters, and even polar bears. They are not one single family of animals. Instead, they are joined by their need for marine environments. They use the sea to find food and stay alive. These animals play a huge role in keeping ocean ecosystems healthy.

They help by regulating the number of prey in the water.

Each kind of marine mammal lives in the water differently. Some are called obligate water dwellers. This means they live in the water for their entire lives. Whales and dolphins are part of this group.

Other animals are semiaquatic. They spend most of their time swimming. However, they must return to land to mate or have babies. Seals and sea lions do this.

Sea otters often live in kelp forests. Polar bears are different because they live mostly on land. They only enter the water when it is necessary.

History shows how these animals have changed over millions of years. Cetaceans, like whales, became aquatic around 50 million years ago.

Their closest living relatives on land are thought to be hippopotamuses. Sirenians, or sea cows, became aquatic about 40 million years ago. The first sea cows were small, four-legged creatures. Pinnipeds, which include seals, split from other animals 50 million years ago.

Scientists found fossils like Puijila darwini to learn about them. This animal had webbed feet and a long tail like an otter.

Many marine mammals face hard jobs for survival today. About 23% of marine mammal species are currently threatened.

In the past, commercial hunting caused many species to disappear. The Steller's sea cow and the Caribbean monk seal went extinct. Some animals, like the gray whale, have grown in number again. However, the North Atlantic right whale is critically endangered. Other dangers include fast ships and loud noise pollution.

Animals can also get caught in fishing nets by accident.

Marine mammals can be found all over the world. They live where the ocean is very productive.

Many species, like sea otters, stay near the coast. They might live in rocky shores or kelp forests.

Other animals, like sperm whales, dive very deep into the open ocean. Some animals move long distances every year. This is called migration. Seals might move based on changes in the water or sun. Polar bears must follow the ice to find food.
