Gingivitis is a sickness that makes your gums red and puffy.

It happens when germs build up on your teeth. These germs form a sticky layer called plaque. Plaque can hide in small gaps. It can also hide in tiny grooves near the gums.

When plaque stays, it makes your body react. The germs make chemicals and toxins. These can cause inflammation, which is when parts of the body get red and swollen. Your gums might feel sore or tender. They may also bleed when you brush or floss. You might even notice bad breath.

If you do not treat it, the sickness can get worse. It can turn into periodontitis. This is a more serious problem that can hurt the bone around your teeth. This might even lead to losing a tooth.

But you can fix gingivitis! Good oral hygiene, like brushing and flossing, helps. Using a powered toothbrush works better than a manual one. Dentists can also help. They use tools to clean the plaque away.

Some toothpastes and mouthwashes also help fight the germs.
