This helps prevent tooth decay. Decay is when your teeth get holes called cavities. It also helps prevent gum disease. This is when your gums get red and swollen.

To stay healthy, you should brush your teeth twice a day. It is good to brush after breakfast and before bed. Many people use toothpaste with fluoride. Fluoride is a tool that helps fix tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard part of your tooth. You should brush for at least two minutes. This removes more plaque than brushing for a short time.

Brushing is not enough on its own. A toothbrush only cleans about half of the plaque. Plaque is a sticky, yellow film made of bacteria.

You must also clean between your teeth. This is called interdental cleaning. You can use floss or small brushes to do this. If plaque stays too long, it turns into calculus. Calculus is a hard layer that only a dentist can remove. Keeping your mouth clean helps you keep your smile!
