These animals have special teeth to help them eat. Their teeth change based on what they eat. Hypocarnivores have large molars. Molars are the flat teeth used for grinding. These teeth help crush plants and fruit. In contrast, hypercarnivores have smaller molars. They use their teeth more for slicing meat.

This way of living is very old. The split into different eating groups happened 40 million years ago. Some ancient dogs changed their diets during this time. Three kinds of dogs made this shift. These were Oxetocyon, Phlaocyon, and Cynarctus. They lived during the Oligocene and Miocene times.

Many different species have used this strategy. In North America, 25 species lived together 30 million years ago. An animal named Prohesperocyon lived 38 to 33.9 million years ago. It showed a shift toward eating fruit. Large hypocarnivores like the genus Ursus appeared later. They grew during the mid-to-late Miocene and Pliocene.
