Mesocarnivore

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A mesocarnivore is a special kind of meat-eater. Most of their food is meat, which makes up 30 to 70 percent of what they eat. The rest of their diet comes from other things like insects, fruit, or fungi.

These animals are usually small or medium in size. Most weigh less than 15 kilograms. Humans are a very big exception to this rule! Many of these animals belong to large families like the Canidae, which includes foxes and coyotes. Other families include skunks, raccoons, and mongooses.

These animals work in many different ways to survive. Some are nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night. For example, the masked palm civet in China is less active during winter months. Their eating habits change based on what is available. A yellow-throated marten might eat small mammals in the winter when fruit is hard to find. Their teeth are also built for many tasks. They use incisors and canines to grab prey. They use pointed premolars to hold food. Finally, they use molars to slice and crush.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. We can look back at fossils like Prohesperocyon to see early versions. These early animals had three incisors and one canine tooth. They also had four premolars on top and three molars on the bottom. During the Middle and Late Miocene, meat-eaters that ate mostly meat had much larger ranges. Mesocarnivores have different ranges because they often need to live near certain plants. This helps us understand how animals changed over millions of years.

There are many famous mesocarnivores in the world today. The red fox lives in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. An adult red fox can weigh up to 14 kilograms. In North America, the coyote can live up to 14 years. Coyotes weigh between 9 and 23 kilograms. The raccoon has a body length of 75 to 90 centimeters. Some mongooses are very small, like the dwarf mongoose. It only grows to about 17 to 24 centimeters long.

Mesocarnivores help the earth stay healthy. They play a huge role in the ecosystem. Because they are small, they can carry seeds to new places. They can move seeds up to one kilometre away. This helps plants grow in open spaces. They also help control the number of other animals. Without top predators, mesocarnivores can increase their scavenging options. This changes how the whole food web works. Even though their homes are changing due to cities, many animals are trying to adapt.
