This fox lives in many places across the Northern Hemisphere. You can find them in North America, Europe, and Asia. They even live in parts of North Africa. Some have moved to Australia too. Because they live in so many places, they are very good at adapting. They can live in the wild or in busy cities.

This ability helps them survive almost anywhere.

Red foxes have a very clever way of living. They usually live in small family groups. Often, a mated pair stays together with their young. The males are called tods or dogs. The females are called vixens. The babies are known as kits or cubs.

These kits stay with their parents to help care for new babies. This teamwork helps the whole family stay strong. It is a smart way for them to grow.

Finding food is a big part of their lives. Red foxes mostly eat small rodents like mice. They also like to eat rabbits and squirrels. Sometimes they hunt game birds or reptiles. They might even eat fruit and vegetables.

Even though they are good hunters, they must be careful. Larger animals can attack them. Wolves, coyotes, and golden jackals are dangerous. Even huge birds like golden eagles can hunt them. They must always stay alert.

These foxes have a very long history. They first appeared in Eurasia a long time ago. This was during the Middle Pleistocene, at least 400,000 years ago.

Later, they moved to North America. Some fossils show they lived near early humans. Humans have hunted them for many centuries. People have also used them for the fur trade. They appear in many old stories and myths too.

There are many different kinds of red foxes. Scientists recognize 45 different subspecies.

Some are large and live in the north. Others are small and live in hot deserts. In North America, there are two main groups. One group lives in the north in Alaska and Canada. The other group lives in the western mountains. These different groups help the fox live in many climates. It is amazing how one animal can fit so many homes.
