These animals live in many places like Tasmania and the east coast. They love forests with thick brush and many eucalyptus trees. They are nocturnal, which means they are most active at night. During the day, they sleep in nests called dreys. These nests can be in tree hollows or made of branches.

A group in a nest might include a male and female. They also live with their offspring in these communal homes.

Eating is a very busy job for these possums. They use sharp molars to slice through leaves, flowers, and fruit. They prefer young leaves because they are easier to eat. The possum has a clever way to get extra energy.

After eating, fine food particles go to a part of the gut called the caecum. These particles stay there for up to 70 hours to be digested. The possum then produces special bits called caecotropes. The possum eats these bits again to gain more protein. This helps them stay strong even when eating low-quality leaves.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. The name of the species comes from Greek and Latin words. The Greek name means "false hand." The Latin name means "pilgrim" or "alien."

One type of subspecies was found at the Endeavour River. There are different types, like the Rufous ringtail possum. Another group is called the Western ringtail possum. It lives in the southwest of Australia. It used to be a subspecies, but now it is its own species.

Many interesting numbers describe the life of a possum. A grown possum is about one meter long. This does not count the tail, which is also about one meter long. The tail has a white tip that covers 25% of its length. A mother carries her babies in a pouch for 120 to 130 days. Most babies are born between May and July. The mating season can happen anytime from April to December. An average litter has two babies, but sometimes there are three.

Ringtail possums share their world with many other creatures. They live in roles similar to monkeys or squirrels.

They use their prehensile tails to grab onto branches while climbing. This tail acts like a fifth limb to keep them steady. However, they face hard jobs in the wild today. Red foxes are predators that hunt them. Clearing land also destroys the forests they call home. They must also watch out for cars and domestic pets.
