It is the second-largest type of possum in the Australasian region. These animals are nocturnal, so they are most active during the night. They are also semiarboreal, which means they spend much of their time in trees. Many people see them in cities because they adapt well to human areas. They are clever foragers that might even visit vegetable gardens or kitchen areas.

This animal has a very special way of moving through the trees. Its bushy tail is prehensile, meaning it can grasp onto branches. The underside of the tail is actually hairless to help it grip better. The possum also has sharp claws on its front feet for climbing. On its hind feet, the first toe has no claw but provides a strong grasp. To stay clean, the possum uses its third and fourth toes, which are fused together. This helps the animal groom its thick, woolly fur.

People first brought these possums to New Zealand in the 1850s. At that time, the goal was to start a fur industry. However, the mild climate in New Zealand helped them thrive very quickly. Because they had almost no natural predators there, they became a major pest. They can damage forests, fruit trees, and even buildings. In New Zealand, the population once reached 60 to 70 million animals. Today, that number has dropped to about 30 million due to control efforts.

Brushtail possums are mostly folivores, which means they eat many types of leaves. They especially love eucalyptus leaves, but they do not eat only one thing. They are actually omnivores that eat flowers, seeds, and even small animals like rats or birds' eggs. Their rounded teeth are built for crushing food rather than cutting it finely. This helps them eat fruit and herbs more easily. In Australia, they live in many places like Tasmania and the Kimberley. In the Kimberley, local groups call them nunguin. Other groups use names like walambari or wayurta.

Life for a brushtail possum begins in a very tiny way. A female carries her young in a well-developed pouch. When a baby is born, it is only 16 to 18 days old. The tiny newborn must climb through the mother's fur to reach the pouch. It stays inside for four or five months to grow safely. Once it is older, the young might ride on its mother's back. This continues until the young is about 7 to 9 months old. In the wild, these animals can live for up to 13 years.
