It is a marsupial. This means mothers have a pouch to carry their young.

When a baby is born, it is very tiny. The baby climbs into the mother's pouch to grow. It stays there for four or five months.

These possums are nocturnal. This means they are active at night. They spend much of their time in trees. Their big, bushy tail is prehensile. This means the tail can grasp onto branches like a hand. They use sharp claws on their feet to climb, too.

Brushtail possums eat many things. They like eucalyptus leaves, but they also eat fruit and seeds. They may even eat small animals like insects or birds' eggs. They can live up to 13 years in the wild.

In New Zealand, these animals are a pest. They were brought there in the 1850s. Now, they can hurt the forests and native birds.
