The Arctic fox is a small animal that lives in the cold Arctic tundra.

You might know it as the white fox or the snow fox. These foxes are very good at living in freezing places. They have a thick, warm coat of fur. This fur is the best insulation of any mammal. It works like a heavy blanket to keep heat inside.

This helps them survive in the harsh Northern Hemisphere.

Staying warm is a big job for a small fox. They have a compact body with short legs and small ears. This shape helps them keep heat from escaping. They also have fur on the soles of their feet.

To stay even warmer, they curl up tightly. They tuck their legs and head under their bodies. They often hide their nose behind a big, fluffy tail.

These foxes come in two different colors. These are called morphs. The white morph is brown in summer and turns white in winter.

The blue morph is black, brown, or grey in summer. In winter, the blue morph becomes a lighter color.

Most foxes in the world are the white morph. The blue morph is most common in Iceland and Fennoscandia. They shed their fur twice a year to change coats.

Arctic foxes are very clever hunters. They eat many small creatures like lemmings and voles.

They also eat fish, birds, and even seaweed. Sometimes they eat carrion, which is meat from animals that are already dead.

They can even hear lemmings moving under four or five inches of snow. When they hear something, they pounce and punch through the snow to catch it. This helps them find food even when it is hidden.

In the spring, foxes build large underground dens.

These dens have many tunnels and can be very large. They use these homes to raise their pups. A mother can have as many as 25 pups in one litter.

The pups are born blind and deaf. They stay in the den for a few weeks. Most foxes only live three to four years, but some can live to be 11. This is a very busy life in the snow.
