The fennec fox is the smallest fox in the world.

It lives in the sandy deserts of North Africa. This area reaches from Mauritania to the Sinai Peninsula. These foxes are very special because they live in places with extreme heat. They have adapted to survive where there is very little water. The fennec fox is a member of the Canidae family. This is the same family that includes many other types of dogs.

To live in the desert, the fennec fox has many clever tools. Its most famous feature is its huge ears. These ears help the fox let heat out of its body to stay cool. They also help the fox hear tiny movements of prey underground. The fox has sand-colored fur that reflects sunlight during the day. This same fur keeps the fox warm during cold desert nights.

Their paws even have thick fur to protect them from hot sand. Inside their bodies, large kidneys help them save every drop of water.

Scientists have studied these foxes for a long time. Eberhardt Zimmermann first described the species in 1780. Since then, many people have given it different scientific names. For example, Johann Friedrich Gmelin used a different name in 1788. In 1978, Gordon Barclay Corbet gave them the name Vulpes zerda. This is the name we use today.

DNA evidence shows that the Blanford's fox is its closest living relative. They are part of a group of eight desert fox species.

Fennec foxes are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night.

This helps them avoid the hottest part of the day. They live in families and dig burrows in the sand. These dens can be very large with many entrances. Fennec foxes are omnivores, so they eat many different things. They hunt for insects, small rodents, lizards, and birds. They also eat plants like fruits, roots, and tubers. In the wild, they usually live for about 10 years.

These little foxes are famous in many places. The fennec fox is the national animal of Algeria. You might even see them in books like The Little Prince.

Some people keep them as exotic pets, but they are also trapped for sale. While they face threats from human expansion, they are not currently at risk of extinction. They are listed as a species of least concern. This means they are doing okay in the wild for now.
