The snowshoe hare is a special animal found across North America.

It is also known as the varying hare or the snowshoe rabbit. This animal is very important to the forests where it lives. It plays a big role in the food web. Many other animals depend on the hare for food. Scientists study them to learn how nature works.

This hare has amazing ways to survive in the wild. Its large hind feet act like natural snowshoes.

These big feet stop the hare from sinking into deep snow. Thick fur on the soles protects its feet from freezing. The hare also uses camouflage to hide from danger. Its fur turns white during the winter months. In the summer, the fur becomes a rusty brown color.

This change helps the hare blend into its surroundings.

People have been studying this hare for a long time. A German naturalist named Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben first described it in 1777.

He called it the American hare. He noticed it was a medium size for a hare. It was larger than a European rabbit but smaller than a mountain hare. He also saw that it had longer hind feet than the mountain hare. This helped scientists group the animal correctly.

There are many interesting facts about how the hare lives. A snowshoe hare can weigh between 1.43 and 1.55 kilograms.

Its ears are about 62 to 70 millimeters long. These ears have black tufts of fur on the edges. The hare does not hibernate during the winter. Instead, it stays active at night. In the summer, it eats grass, ferns, and leaves.

In the winter, it eats twigs and tree bark.

Learning about the hare helps us understand other animals too. The Canada lynx is a major predator of the snowshoe hare.

For many years, hunters recorded how many hares and lynx were caught. They saw that the numbers of both animals rose and fell in a cycle. When there are many hares, the lynx numbers go up. When the hare numbers go down, the lynx numbers follow. This relationship is a famous case study for biology students everywhere.
