The European hare is a large and fast animal. It lives in parts of Europe and Asia.

These hares are built for life in open country. They are herbivorous, which means they only eat plants. They mostly eat grasses and herbs.

In the winter, they eat twigs, buds, and bark. They also eat farm crops like wheat or sugar beet. Sometimes they even eat their own waste to get extra vitamins. This helps them get more energy from their food.

To stay safe, the hare has special ways of living. They are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. During the day, they hide in a small dip in the ground. This dip is called a form.

If a predator like a red fox comes near, the hare runs. They have long, powerful legs for endurance running. They also have wide nostrils and large hearts to help them breathe while running. They can run at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.

People have known about these animals for a long time. A German scientist named Peter Simon Pallas first described the hare in 1778.

In the past, people hunted them in many ways. In Britain, people used beagling or hare coursing. These sports are now illegal in Britain.

The hare is also a famous symbol in many cultures. It can represent reproduction and fertility. The funny behavior of hares in spring even gave us the phrase "mad as a March hare."

There are many interesting facts about how hares grow. A female hare can have three litters in one year.

Each litter usually has three or four young ones. These babies are very active as soon as they are born. A hare can live for up to twelve years.

The breeding season happens from January to August. During the spring, hares act very differently. They come out in the daylight and might "box" with their paws.

Scientists use DNA to study how hares are related to other animals. For example, they look at the Cape hare to see if it is the same species.

Some studies say they are the same, but others say they are different. A study in 2024 helped show that the Abyssinian hare is the European hare's closest relative.

Hares are also different from rabbits. Hares have much longer legs and wider nostrils. This makes them much better at running long distances in open fields.
