Porpoises are small animals that live in the ocean.

They look like dolphins, but they are different. Porpoises have flat, spade-shaped teeth. Dolphins have cone-shaped teeth instead. Porpoises also have short snouts. They do not have long beaks.

These animals have many special parts. They have a thick layer of fat called blubber. Blubber keeps them warm in cold water. It also helps them stay strong when food is hard to find. Porpoises are very fast swimmers. They use a tail fin to move up and down. They use their flippers to steer.

To find things, porpoises use echolocation. This is a way to sense the world using sound. They make clicking noises with a part on their head called a melon. The sound hits objects and bounces back. This helps them navigate and talk to each other.

Porpoises eat fish and squid. Mothers give birth to one calf each year. The milk is very thick, like toothpaste. This milk helps the baby grow its blubber quickly.

Some porpoises, like the vaquita, are in danger. They can get caught in fishing nets. There are very few vaquitas left in the wild.
