These animals are part of a group called Capra. This group includes nine other species of goat. The Alpine ibex is a social animal, but males and females live apart for most of the year. They only come together during the breeding season in December and January. This species is very important to the mountain landscape where it lives.

Living in the high mountains requires special skills. The Alpine ibex lives on steep, rough ground at heights up to 4,000 meters.

To climb these cliffs, they use sharp, highly separated hooves. They also have a rubbery callus under their front feet to help them grip. This allows them to scale slopes that are very steep. They can even climb the 57-degree walls of the Cingino Dam in Italy. While they are climbing, females and kids often move in a zig-zag path.

Science tells us much about how these goats changed over time. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus first described the Alpine ibex in 1758.

Fossils show that the genus Capra may have started in Central Asia. These goats then spread to Europe and East Africa. Scientists have found fossils of this species in France and Italy from the last glacial period. Some fossils suggest the Alpine ibex was even larger in the past than it is today.

These goats have many interesting physical traits. The males and females look very different, which is called sexual dimorphism.

A male can weigh up to 100 kilograms and grow very large horns. Females are much smaller and weigh much less. Both sexes have large, backward-curving horns with ridges on them. In the spring, they shed their thick winter coats for thinner summer hair. This hair is usually brownish-grey with darker markings on the throat.

It is amazing to think how close these animals came to disappearing. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, hunting caused them to vanish from many places.

By the 19th century, there were fewer than 100 individuals left in the world. This is called a population bottleneck. Because so few survived, they have very low genetic diversity. Luckily, all ibexes living today come from one group in Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy.
