The Alpine ibex, known scientifically as Capra ibex, is a specialized species of goat native to the Alps of central Europe. 

To survive at elevations as high as 4,000 meters, the Alpine ibex has developed incredible physical adaptations. They are master climbers capable of navigating steep, rough terrain and open alpine meadows. Their hooves are sharp and highly separated to provide grip on rocky surfaces. Additionally, they possess a rubbery callus under their front feet. This helps them scale cliffs and slopes as steep as 30 to 45 degrees. They have even been observed scaling the 57-degree walls of the Cingino Dam in Italy. While climbing, females and kids often use a zig-zag path to ascend. 
The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females have distinct physical differences. Males are much larger and more robust than females. A male can reach a height of 100 centimeters at the withers and weigh up to 100 kilograms. In contrast, females are smaller, with a shoulder height of 70 centimeters and a weight of only 60 kilograms. Both sexes possess large, backward-curving horns with an elliptical cross-section. These horns feature transverse ridges on their front surfaces. However, male horns are substantially longer than female horns. While females reach only 60 centimeters, males can grow much larger. 
Socially, the Alpine ibex lives in groups organized by sex and age. For most of the year, adult males and females live in separate habitats. Females typically form stable groups of 5 to 10 members, often including dependent kids. Males live in groups ranging from 2 to 16 individuals, though some groups exceed 50. Older males are often found living alone. The two sexes only congregate during the breeding season, which occurs in December and January. During this time, males use their long horns to fight for access to females. They establish a dominance hierarchy through combat, often clashing head-to-head or bashing rivals' sides. 
History shows that the Alpine ibex nearly vanished from the wild. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, hunting caused the species to disappear from most of its range. By the 19th century, the population suffered a severe bottleneck. This means the number of individuals dropped to fewer than 100. This event led to very low genetic diversity across the entire species. Remarkably, all Alpine ibexes living today are descendants of a single stock from Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy.

Understanding the life cycle of the ibex reveals how they manage extreme environments. They do not hibernate during the winter. Instead, they reduce their heart rate and metabolism to conserve energy. They take shelter in small caves or overhangs on cold nights and bask in the morning sun. The breeding process involves a two-phase rut. In the first phase, males interact with females as a group. In the second phase, a dominant male may separate to follow and guard a single female in oestrus. After a gestation period of about five months, females give birth to one or two kids on safe, rocky slopes.
