The third is A. m. marsupialis, the smallest subspecies, which lives south of the Orange River. 
History shows that the springbok has a deep evolutionary past. Fossil evidence suggests the species evolved about three million years ago from a gazelle-like ancestor during the Pliocene. Scientists have identified three extinct species of Antidorcas, such as A. bondi and A. australis, which died out around 7,000 years ago. The modern form likely arose from a species called A. recki during the Pleistocene period. 
To survive in dry areas, the springbok has developed remarkable physiological adaptations. It is primarily a browser, meaning it eats shrubs and succulents. These plants provide enough moisture that the antelope can live without drinking water for years. Their speed is also supported by specialized muscle biology. They possess a 58% concentration of glycolytic fast-twitch muscle fibers. Additionally, their muscle activity for the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase is four times higher than that of humans. 
Socially, springbok live in mixed-sex herds known as harems. These groups can range from as few as three to as many as 180 individuals. 

Understanding the springbok provides insight into how specialized animals adapt to specific ecological niches. Their ability to thrive in expanding populations makes them a success story in conservation. While they are valued as game animals for meat and skin, they remain a vital part of the African ecosystem.
