Because of its immense natural and cultural variety, it is often called "Little Switzerland." The canton is unique because it sits on both sides of the central Alpine barrier. It includes many different ecosystems and landscapes. This diversity makes it one of the most complex regions in the Swiss Confederation.

The geography of the Grisons is defined by the massive Alps. The landscape is extremely rugged and features over 1,000 mountain summits. The highest peak is Piz Bernina, which sits in a range of similar high mountains. Other notable ranges include the Albula, Bregaglia, and Silvretta. Elevations vary greatly, from low points to very high mountain areas. This terrain results in many high-altitude settlements, especially in the Upper Engadin. The canton is the second-highest in Switzerland when measuring mean elevation.

A fascinating feature of the Grisons is its water systems. The canton belongs to four of the five drainage basins in Switzerland. This means water from the region flows into different seas. The Rhine river flows north toward the North Sea. The Inn river flows through the Engadin valley toward the Black Sea. Other rivers, like the Moesa and Mera, flow south toward the Mediterranean Sea.

There are approximately 600 lakes scattered throughout the mountains. Some are natural, such as Lake Sils and Lake St. Moritz. Others are artificial reservoirs used for hydroelectricity production.

The history of the region stretches back to ancient times. The Rhaeti people originally occupied these lands. In 15 BC, the area became part of the Roman province of Raetia. The settlement of Curia served as the capital during this period.

During the late Middle Ages, three distinct alliances formed. These were the League of God's House, the Grey League, and the League of the Ten Jurisdictions. In 1471, these groups joined to form the Three Leagues. This alliance eventually became part of the Old Swiss Confederacy. In 1803, the Three Leagues officially became a single Swiss canton.

Cultural identity in the Grisons is tied to its unique languages. It is the only trilingual canton in Switzerland. It is also the only canton where Romansh has official status. Romansh is Switzerland's fourth national language.

The different languages reflect the complex history of the local people. This linguistic variety is a core part of the local identity. The canton is also known for its many Alpine resort towns. Places like Davos and St. Moritz are famous destinations for tourists. The Rhaetian Railway, a narrow-gauge network, connects the capital to many remote valleys.

The climate in the Grisons varies significantly by location. In the high mountains, snow remains on the summits all year. The Engadin valley is much drier than the northern or southern sides of the Alps. The southern valleys are much wetter and warmer. For example, the town of Grono is one of the warmest places in Switzerland. It has recorded the highest temperature in the country.

Conversely, the Upper Engadin is one of the coldest inhabited regions. Samedan has recorded a low temperature of -37.9 °C. In the warmest southern areas, people can even grow olives and figs.

Today, the Grisons remains a vital part of the Swiss landscape. It is the least densely populated canton in the country. Most people live in mountainous areas or remote valleys. The capital city, Chur, is the only sizable city in the region.
