These animals are very important to their ecosystems. They live in many places like grasslands and forests. Some live in open forests that lose leaves, while others live in evergreen forests. They can even be found on abandoned farms. Wild banteng are currently listed as Critically Endangered. This means they are at a very high risk of dying out. Their numbers have fallen by more than 50% in recent decades.

Banteng show something called sexual dimorphism. This means males and females look very different from each other. Adult bulls are usually dark brown or black. They are large and have a sturdy build. Cows are thinner and usually a pale brown or chestnut red.

Both males and females have long horns. Bulls have long, slender horns that arc upward. Cows have shorter horns that curve inward. There is also a large white patch on their rump. This patch might help a herd stay together in the dark.

These animals are herbivores, so they eat only plants. They eat things like grasses, leaves, flowers, and fruit.

They also eat shoots and sedges. Banteng are very good at finding food. They may move to higher forests during the rainy season. They can survive for several days without water during droughts. However, they like to drink from standing water when they can. They even visit salt licks to get the salt they need. Some have even been seen eating seaweed in Australia.

Banteng usually live in herds. A herd can have between two and forty individuals. Most herds have one single bull with many cows and young.

They are very shy and reclusive animals. They use their strong sense of smell to find predators. They also have very good hearing to stay safe. Tigers and wild dogs are some of their predators. A mother carries her calf for nearly 285 days. This is about nine or ten months. After birth, a single calf is born.

A German naturalist named Joseph Wilhelm Eduard d'Alton first described the banteng in 1823. He based his work on two skulls from Java. One skull was from a male and one from a female. The name "banteng" comes from the Javanese and Sundanese names for the animal. Scientists have studied them for a long time to learn their history. They even used modern science to clone a banteng. It was the second endangered species to be successfully cloned. It was also the first clone to live past infancy. This shows how much we are learning about them.
