It lives in Southeast Asia and parts of Australia. These animals are often found in forests or grasslands.

Male and female banteng look very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. Bulls are large and dark brown or black. They have long horns that arc upward. Cows are smaller and thinner. They are usually pale brown or red. Both have a big white patch on their rump.

This patch may help the herd stay together in the dark.

Banteng are herbivores. This means they eat only plants. They eat grass, leaves, flowers, and fruit.

They can survive for a few days without water. They often visit salt licks to get salt.

Most banteng live in herds. A group can have up to forty animals. They are very shy and alert. They use smell and hearing to stay safe from predators like tigers.
